Revellers warned of drink spiking
December 31, 2006 09:26am
REVELLERS are being warned to be alert to drink spikers and to watch out for each other this New Year's Eve.
New South Wales Health Minister John Hatzistergos has warned people not to accept drinks from strangers or leave drinks unattended, particularly if the bottle has been opened.
"One of the most important things to remember is to keep an eye out for your friends," Mr Hatzistergos said.
"Drink spiking can put people in dangerous situations, such as having unsafe sex, unwanted pregnancy, violence and criminal activity."
Short-term effects of sedatives such as gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB), also known as grievous bodily harm or fantasy, include drowsiness, relaxation, dizziness and decreased inhibition.
When taken in high doses GHB can lead to muscle spasm, movement and speech impairments, vomiting, collapse and coma.
Mr Hatzistergos said people should alert bar staff immediately if they see somebody spiking drinks.
