I'm re-reading Glue at the moment, and I was just imagining how difficult it must be for some of you non-Scots to understand some of it.

I've read Ecstasy and The Acid House... great stuff!

I think the fact that I hail from England and have had a decent amount of exposure to Scots over the years helped me with understanding the accents and the way Welsh phonetically notates them. It still took me a little while to "get it" though.

The way he does it really forces you to hear the dialogue though, which helps to conjure the characters and their personalities, as if they're in the room with you... :D
 
I've read porno, great book! I bought glue but I got put of by it, because I dont understand what the hells been said.

I understand most of it....I did once glance through an Italian translation of Trainspotting...I think it lost much of the magic:

No, this is a big Scouser.

Got totally mangled. The last line becoming "man from Liverpool", which doesn't really have the same ring to it.

Felix: one question though: what does "ca' canny" mean? I keep seeing it in Ian Rankin novels, and I can't quite work it out.

I've read nearly all of these and had absolutely no trouble.
Somewhere around here I mentioned once before, the thing I love about Irvine Welsh novels is that his literary style transforms my inner voice so that my internal dialogue reads and sounds like a Scot ( This is my heritage dating back over 400 years ).
it actually makes reading is novels all that more fun because it's actually a different experience. =D
