Drink it.

Instead of coffee.

I have been using the Guayaki brand for a couple weeks now. I don't drink coke, nearly as much... maybe one a day-now.

Tastes awesome- and it's good for you.. and it gives energy that lasts.

It's basically the South American green-tea. It actually contains more healthy substance... but I'm not sure if it contains one certain nutrient-ECCG- I think it's called, so I'm planning on continuing to drink green tea- as well...

Usually, in the mornings, I brew two Guayaki Greener Greens... which contain both Yerba Mate and Green Tea... the bags are each 3 grams, compared to 2 or so in other teas...

I never feel "drained", even after working a 10 hour-shift- on my feet all day.. This is the only stimulant beverage I drink.. usually.

"The Healthy Stimulant," yerba maté is the base for herbal medicine in South America and has a staggering list of health benefits with 196 active compounds: 24 vitamins and minerals, 15 amino acids, and 11 polyphenols – powerful antioxidants. Maté is high in chlorophyll and can boast higher polyphenol and antioxidant counts than either green or black teas. Yerba maté provides a unique sustaining energy by its complex combination of xanthine alkaloids: caffeine, theophylline and theobromine. Feel the Good Energy

I, too, have found Yerba Maté to be the best source of Caffeine. I typically HATE caffeine but the balance of xanthines in Yerba Maté seem to be just right if I ever needed it.

So far I have only used raw bulk Yerba Maté, and although it tastes good as you sip, it leaves a disgusting oily after-taste. However, this can be prevented by adding herbs which leave a stronger after-taste.

An acquaintance of mine drinks Yerba Maté every day, and she mentioned a plant (for the life of me I can't remember!) that she adds to the brew and it actually tastes great! What is interesting is that this plant naturally grows close to the Yerba Maté. Or at least, thats what she told me.

let the water you use cool to 80-90 degrees celsius before throwing it on your mate this will prevent a bitter aftertaste , what's an oily taste? I mean my tea looks kinda oily but that's it.

I get it (raw but not in bulk) from an eco store around the corner , never been able to stomach coffee , and now my favorite for a long while ginseng (which kinda seemed to potentiate opiates a little bit) also makes me throw up , so mate it is :)

kinda weird I can eat tons of pills like really a lot , drink cough syrup , eat raw poppies & poppy smoothies but orange juice / coffee and the like make me puke?

have I permanently damaged my stomach? should I go see a doctor?

Thanks for the tip :). By "oily aftertaste" I mean it has the texture and flavour of drinking olive oil as-is (blargh!).

Finding certain things nauseating does not mean you permanently damaged your stomach - different people have different tastes.

^^^That looks awesome! i wanna order myself one.

^^^ and doesn't that look like he's smokin a bowl of weed right there?^^^

not nauseauting , I reall love Orange Juice , gulp it down then forget about it and wham it leaves me quicker than it entered me? (this happend one hour ago I sneezed while barfing , that's worse than any drug i've ever snorted , barf shouldn't be going through your nose ) , weird thing is grapefruit juice is ok while this seems just as or even more acidic?

on a more topical note , these leaves are from Ilex paruguensis , isn't that the coca shrub, by what process is the cocaine removed or does it just degrade when dried, really curious about this stuff ?

^you should start new threads then :)

matte is preatty go, so is tea and coffee though...

Bingeboy: I really don't know what that orange juice problem is. Perhaps you have acquired an alergy towards it? try seeing a specialist.

To clarify: Ilex paraguariensis is the latin binomial for Yerba Maté. Coca leaves are usually either Erythroxylum coca or Eryhtroxylum novagranatense. I do not know how close or distant they are from each other, but they are certainly two different species. I assure you that paraguariensis does not contain cocaine, otherwise it wouldn't be so easy to acquire ;). That being said, the confusion is understandable, since tea from coca leaves is often called "Coca Maté"

I love yerba mate and I've drank it plain, put in honey and soy milk, and drank some mixed with orange/fruit juice. I'm going to try adding rooibos and spearmint and see how those are.

Question:

Does anyone ever experience temporary bouts of laughter after a few yerbas?

/\ not per se, but it does most definitely give me a nice mood lift.

I think that it tastes like dirt, but I find the caffeine and caffeine analog effects nice, much smoother than coffee (and a bit more so than tea).

Exactly what I was going to say. Not metaphorically like dirt but it actually, truly tastes like dirt. I also think its stimulation is nicer and less jittery than other xanthines.

^^ most likely for the following reasons

1. Brand- i dont really know if its cool to talk about this here? so pm me if you want some recommendations, ill talk about them if i find out its ok...

2. how you make it- first thing is use some cool water to cover the leaves and let it absorb into them a bit. it protects flavor and nutrients. also never use boiling water this will make the mate bitter. use it just before it boils. properly prepared mate should taste slightly sweet with a rich earthy flavor....

mate tastes best out of a well cured gourd and bombilla

however i usually make it in a large french press for convenience (second best tasting way)

also you could be making it too strong

hope this helps! :)

enjoy the mate!!!!!

and if anyone has some questions id be glad to answer them the best i can; maybe ill write a bit more about it and how to best enjoy later...

I love the flavor of mate, personally. It's far less tannic and harsh than green tea if you prepare it right, as mentioned above.

Lemme endorse a brand, and I'll let the mods remove it if they like: It's in a yellow package with a laurel of mate leaves and it's tasty as hell. Starts with a G . It's good stuff, and it's a Cal Poly project, so I can't help but give love to my alma mater. They do really good work in rainforest restoration and it's all fair trade and hippie safe as far as I know. They sell everything from bags to bulk, and they're really nice folks!

Try adding milk and honey if ya like. It's a great combo.

i love the business practices of the above mentioned brand and so am partial for this reason (i think fair trade food is a huge step in the right direction in so many ways i wont even get into it)

however if you are a true mate connoisseur you may find it to be lacking in flavor but it is mild and great for newcomers

ohhhhh rooibus is SO good. the taste instantly reminds me of sesshin (zen retreat) :)

^^yessir i think ya know whats up with that one

rooibos compliments the flavor mate very well and is great for ya!

4 Teabags worth of Yerba Mate. Soy/ricemilk. Pure unfiltered honey. soooooo good.

As much as I love it, coffee really fucks with my stomach. I need to get some cocoa extract or pure cocoa too.
