Just found the following:

The Forensic Services Department, Victoria
has, over the past year seen an increase in the
number of dimethylamphetamine seizures. All
of the seizures have been presented as “ice”.
The crystals range from colourless to yellow
and some are quite large crystals. In many of
these items there is a mixture of
dimethylamphetamine HCl and
methylamphetamine HCl.
Below is a table listing some of the seizures
and the ratio of DiMAHCl to MAHCl.
Mass (g) Approx Ratio
DiMAHCl:MAHCl
27.8 trace MA only
0.2 trace MA only
0.3 No MA detected
2.0 5:1*
0.02 3:1
0.4 4:1
3.5 3:1
0.4 4:1
2.0 2:1
0.2 8:1
351.7 5:1
13.4 1:1
397.8 5.1
*The total purity was approximately 56%.

OK now - I UTFSE and found out some stuff about dimeth
- it's fairly inactive (according to PhIKAL?)
- it's presence could indicate the synthesis method being used when making meth
- it will probably not be visually distinguishable from meth, but will not really work

Maybe this is local product made by incompetent chemists?
Maybe this is product made by new synthesis pathway?

In a process analogous to the reduction of pseudoephedrine to methamphetamine, the compound (+)-N-Methylephedrine is reduced to dimethylamphetamine.

It may well be that the producers have been able to source (+)-N-Methylephedrine via a chemical supplier although it is a CAT # 1 substance on the Code of Practice for Supply Diversion into Illicit Drug Manufacture

AFAIK, it's not listed in any product approved by the TGA, as I could not find any mention of it on MIMS. But it may be approved in some veterinary applications.

Another possibility is that it was produced via reductive amination of P2P using dimethylamine. This amine is far easier to get than methylamine, used to make meth. However, unless this was the only amine available, I can't see why the producer wouldn't go for ethylamine instead, as the product ethylamphetamine is reported to be somewhat more active and the amine would be relatively easy to obtain.

Just found a few bottles of Methylephedrine contaioning japanese medications.. didnt know it was used to make di-methyl. It is over the counter there.
