The police chief of tiny Ohio village fatally overdosed on drugs he stole from his department?s evidence room, authorities believe.

Investigators found packages of fentanyl, heroin and LSD in the home of Kirkersville Police Chief James Hughes Jr. after he was found not breathing in a bathroom, Lt. Ron Wright of the nearby Reynoldsburg Police Department said, according to a local NBC station.

All signs suggest the drugs had been previously seized by cops and stored in the Kirkersville Police Department?s evidence room, Wright said.

?There was packaging that indicated that he was taking controlled substances from there,? he said Wednesday.

Hughes, 35, was pronounced dead shortly after an ambulance crew responded to his home in Reynoldsburg around 11 a.m. on May 25.

In addition to the illegal drugs, cops found three syringes, one of which contained fentanyl and one of which had traces of the powerful opioid.

An autopsy released last month said he died accidentally of ?acute intoxication by fentanyl.?

Hughes was named the part-time, $14-a-hour chief of Kirkersville?s police force in March, replacing ex-Chief Jeff Finley, who abruptly resigned over conflicts with Mayor Terry Ashcraft.

An investigation by the Newark (Ohio) Advocate newspaper later revealed Hughes had a checkered past that included allegations of a relationship with a woman who served time at the Fairfield County Jail in Ohio while he worked for the county sheriff?s office.

He also pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in a June 2, 2013, incident during he used racial slurs and spit at a worker in the drive-through window at a fast-foot restaurant in Whitehall, Ohio, according to USA Today.

Following Hughes? death, his wife, Amanda ? with whom he was raising three young children ? created a ?GoFundMe? page to raise $12,000 for funeral expenses, but less than $1,000 has been donated.

I feel bad for his family and all but I can't get over an even part-time police Chief making only $14 an hour. Damn, that's nothing these days!

i couldn't believe that either. you get what you pay for, and we wonder why cops are shooting people for no reason.

Every state pays differently. But looking at the average wage for a cop in the US I think it was meant to say $26 an hour and not $14.

Spitting on fast food workers and ruining people?s lives for a habit you partake in? At least he did one good thing for society. Too bad(?) it was the last thing he ever did.

FTR, this guy sounded like a real piece of work! So, why in the hell would he ever get hired as a police.chief in another town with his background. How hard up are they for cryin' out loud!

Am sure he had good intentions to begin with

It's possible that the deceased engaged in abusive asset forfeitures of law abiding citizens, as well as of course busting individuals for the non-violent possession of a tiny amount of plant matter.

If it's true that he was such a cop, then I'm sorry but good fucking riddance. If not, then I sincerely apologize.

Speaking of Civil Asset Forfeiture, that is some ridiculous shit they're pulling on the public, yes it could happen to you and me! I mean, that shit sounds like something straight out of Nazi Germany, for real. At least, police state material and why it hasn't been challenged at the Supreme Court level is crazy. There is no way, IMO, those laws would hold up to that level of legal scrutiny. What do you guys think?

It could absolutely happen to either of us, and I'd be seething with rage if I'd be in such a predicament.

It's just another way that law enforcement has used the war on (certainly politically-incorrect) drugs to profit off of the American people.

I cannot overstate how outrageous it is for such government-sanctioned theft to exist in The Land of the Free. It's bad enough that the private prison industry is thriving, and that despite having approximately 5% of the world's population, the U.S. is the number 1 jailor of its citizens by a fairly-large amount.

Thanks to bigoted pieces of shit like Harry Anslinger and Richard Nixon, 'To Protect and to Serve' has essentially become 'To Oppress and to Profit'. And justice for fuck all.
