US ads try to shock smokers into quitting

The government wants graphic images of lost limbs, tracheotomy holes and paralysis to shock smokers into quitting. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention is using former smokers with serious diseases in an ad campaign to try and decrease the nation's stubborn smoking rate.​

Shock tactics will only take the agenda so far. The UK discovered that about 15 years ago.

Most people will realise that limb amputation, stomas and voiceboxes are comparatively rare, and that the far duller experience of most long-term smokers is one of slow gradual decline.
