A RISING number of drug users are clogging up Lothian hospitals as a result of substance abuse, figures reveal. Three patients every day are being discharged from hospitals as a direct result of drugs, with the number rising by 30 per cent in just three years. And as the statistics relate to admissions due to the direct physiological effects of drugs, rather than injuries caused as an indirect result of substance abuse, there are fears that they represent only the tip of the iceberg in terms of the strain narcotics are placing on hospitals.

Gavin Brown, Conservative MSP for the Lothians, said: “The fact that these figures are so high and on the increase should be of great concern to all of us. “The Scottish Government claims to have had an approach over the last few years based on recovery, however, these figures and others suggest the approach is not being effectively implemented on the ground. This should be investigated as a matter of urgency and we need to spell out clearly how we intend to tackle the problem.”

Opioids, including heroin and methadone, were by far the most common cause of acute hospital visits, accounting for 738 discharges in the region over the year-long period. Cannabinoids, sedatives and cocaine also led to stints in hospital.

The figures do not include alcohol.

lol figures do not include alcohol probably not tobacco either.

why are all these people going to the hospital anyway? overdose? and why cannabinoids/cocaine? anxiety?

there are many ways to reduce this issue, public awareness and education on drug use would be a start.

That's two people a day in a region of over 1 million.

Judging by the reader comments in the Scotsman it looks like they've successfully reinforced the stereotype of opiate addicts as being objects of hate.

Grey faced, skeletal, toothless, human rats
Is there any species more detestable in this city than our junkies.
Complete and utter waste of space. Why are we even treating them in a NHS hospital. These things pay no tax.
They would be better off left untreated and let nature takes its course.

Very apt thread next to this one currently on DITM, "Why Do We Treat Heroin Addicts Like They Deserve to Die? ".

i wonder how serious those kinds of assholes are, are they really that stupid and/or ignorant?

That's pretty sick. i would only go to hospital if I was experiencing death-threatening symptomps from overdose or withdrawal. Even if many would view it like you don't deserve any help and have brought it all on yourself, etc. one of your responsibilities to society and your family is actually to keep yourself alive and not burden so many with your untimely death. Otherwise you could be criticised for that - so what are you supposed to do?

seek medical attention and burden the system? lol it's not really a paradox though as the system is hardly burdened by drug use in comparison to everything else out there. It doesn't take a whole lot of resources to see someone in benzo withdrawal and set them up with some diazepam and a referall to a Dr to taper. Or to treat opioid overdose or stimulant overdose. Those are all pretty simple things to treat and probably comprise the vast majority of hospital visits by drug users.
