So many new drugs on offer it's like a 'sweet shop' for users, says professor.

Three Scots are dying every month because of so-called “legal highs”, according to new figures. A total of 36 people died in Scotland in 2012 after taking legal drugs that are also known as “party pills”. This represents a rise of 300 per cent on the 12 people who are reported to have died in Scotland from legal highs in 2010. The deaths from legal highs were among nearly 500 drug deaths recorded in Scotland in 2012. It also emerged that the cost of prescribing methadone in community pharmacies rose last year by nearly £4 million to £22.4 million.

Legal high drugs are usually psychoactive substances, often labelled and sold as plant food or bath salts, or marked as not fit for human consumption to get round the law. They are generally sold through the internet but are sometimes also sold at petrol stations, newsagents and takeaways. Drug policy for the whole of the UK is controlled by Westminster but both the UK and Scottish Governments have insisted they are committed to tackling legal highs. Ministers have already moved to ban some of the more dangerous drugs, only for drug barons to replace one banned substance with another legal one. Professor Neil McKeganey, director of the Centre for Drug Misuse Research, warned that there were now so many of the new drugs available it was like a “sweet shop” for users.

I'd be interested to know what other drugs, both legal, and illegal, were in their bodies, and note that only 3 people are dying per MONTH from legal highs (probably inflated figures, according to Dr. David Nutt) but alcohol is killing 20 people per WEEK.

BBC News - "Booze still kills '20 people a week' in Scotland" - Google search terms: "scotland; alcohol deaths; 2013"

I think really to get an idea of the death rate, you'd need to put it into context of deaths per user, and also separate out acute toxicity from long term harm.

For example, alcohol and tobacco death rates are high (Tobacco more so proportionately to the number of users), but many of these are due to long drawn out related diseases.

Acute tobacco overdose for example, isn't something you often hear of - acute alcohol poisoning isn't unheard of, but chronic alcohol related problems are pretty much where the majority of deaths come from.

I imagine a lot of alcohol's deaths are attributed to fucking around when drunk - driving, swimming and stuff that drunks probably shouldn't be doing. It's still a killer regardless, you don't see people getting MD'd up and thinking they're invincible

Here is the report this story is based on.

Only two people died from taking "legal highs." All of the other deaths implicated illegal drugs in combination with legal ones.

Also, the government will manipulate "facts" to suit their needs.

For instance, if one died on, say, 6-APB at the weekend, even though the drug was banned a year ago, the government will still calculate that death as one brought about by a "Legal High", because it suits them. It makes the statistics look worse & after all, the first casualty in any war, is the truth is it not..?

In this case, the government report was pretty straightforward and honest. It was the media that twisted the facts.
