I can feel myself getting older, dumber and fatter.
I get light headed when I bend down to tie my shoes.
I'm no longer sure how much I have left;
dollars,
hope,
love,
days.
Maybe I ran out a few weeks ago and this is ghost poetry
from beyond the grave?
No big deal.
I've got fifteen beers,
as well I even bought a special expensive one in a fancy green can.
Sixteen.
Sitting here with my buddy Death.
C'est la vie, Coup de gras.
Domo arigato, dame tu amor.
Click.
Sorry buddy, I was just surfing through the TV channels.
"There's nothing good on tonight" I told Death.
And so we sat together quietly and peacefully,
sorting out unwanted imperfect memories
and lighting them on fire.
He sits there holding a shining mirror
without reflection.
He is silent but he watches.
He sees but has no eyes.
He thinks but has no mind.
We often sit together every night,
Death and I,
playing a game of chess.
He has one move left,
I have none.
He sits motionless,
calculating.
This fancy beer I bought is fucking amazing,
it connects me with infinity,
and tastes good to boot.
A man without beer is like a fish without water,
a bird without wings.
Beer flows through the heart of the tiger,
and me.
Death is inferior to this.
He can only win an obvious victory,
after my greatest blunder.
Death gets out of his chair and stands beside me,
"It really is a beautiful night" he tells me.
I reach down and grab my cigarette,
moving it ever so slowly closer to my arm,
it reaches the little hairs and they curl in sizzling fear.
This feels right.
My cat watches me with silent contempt from the bed.
There are no more,
and no less,
ways to make this night
any more
beautiful.
