Synthesis of iprocin

I want to synthesize 4-ho-dipt. In Tihkal it is written "The reaction was diluted with 100 mL CHCl3 and shake with 30 mL of a 5% aqueous NaHSO4 followed by 30 mL of a saturated aqueous NaHCO3 solution. After crying over anhydrous MgSO4, the organic solvents were removed under vacuum". Why dilute RM with chloroform (why not use ether) and why add solutions of sodium salts? Maybe there is some more understandable synthesis? Thank you all!
