A 26-year-old man has been sentenced to a year in prison for supplying ecstasy to his friend Sylvia Choi, which may have caused her death at the Sydney leg of Stereosonic in December.

Daniel Huynh pleaded guilty to supplying two ecstasy tablets to Choi, a 25-year-old pharmacist, at the Homebush event over summer, as ABC News reports. He will now serve a 12-month sentence with a non-parole period of six months.

Magistrate Michelle Goodwin explained the severity of the sentence was due to comments Huynh made in a WhatsApp thread with Ms Choi, referring to the price of importing the drug as well as instructions to Choi and friends to "deny deny deny" if arrested by police.

"The language in those conversations show he was an organised and experienced person in drug supply," Magistrated Goodwin said during Huynh's sentencing at Burwood court.

Huynh's lawyer, Carolyn Davenport, argued that he should not be punished for Choi's death as it still had not been confirmed whether it was specifically ecstasy that was fatal drug the 25-year-old overdosed on, or something else she may have taken that day.

"He has expressed remorse at the death and the supply of drugs. He has pleaded guilty at the first opportunity," Davenport told the court, adding her client is "not to be sentenced for the death of Ms Choi" but rather just drug supply.

She also said that a group of Huynh's friends each ordered a specific amount of ecstasy and that he was to make no profit from the deal.

Back in April, Stereosonic organisers announced the electronic dance festival would not be going ahead this year but "will return in 2017, bigger and better."

According to Stereosonic co-founder and former owner, Frank Cotela, told triple j Hack

The hiatus is probably not due to the drug-related deaths, according to Stereosonic co-founder and former owner Frank Cotela. He told triple j Hack the festival's 2016 absence is instead likely due to the festival's parent company, US owners SFX, running into financial trouble.

Sounds like they made a group order on the darknet, pretty fucked that he's now stuck in jail. It should be the cops and politicians filling festivals with sniffer dogs and refusing to allow pill testing who are blamed for this tragic incident.
