Pfizer to sell Viagra online in new move for drug companies

MEN who are bashful about needing help in the bedroom can now buy that little blue pill online.

In a first for the drug industry, Pfizer will begin selling its popular erectile dysfunction pill Viagra directly to patients on its website.

Men still will need a prescription to buy the blue, diamond-shaped pill on viagra.com, but they no longer have to face a pharmacist to get it filled. And for those who are bothered by Viagra's steep $25-a-pill price, Pfizer is offering three free pills with the first order and 30 per cent off the second one.

Pfizer's bold move blows up the drug industry's distribution model. Drugmakers don't sell medicines directly to patients. Instead, they sell in bulk to wholesalers, who then distribute the drugs to pharmacies, hospitals and doctors' offices.

But the world's second-largest drugmaker is trying a new strategy to tackle a problem that plagues the industry. Unscrupulous online pharmacies increasingly offer patients counterfeit versions of Viagra and other brand-name drugs for up to 95 per cent off with no prescription needed. Patients don't realise the drugs are fake or that legitimate pharmacies require a prescription.

Other major drugmakers likely will watch Pfizer's move closely. If it works, drugmakers could begin selling other medicines that are rampantly counterfeited and sold online, particularly treatments for non-urgent conditions seen as embarrassing. Think: diet drugs, medicines for baldness and birth control pills.

"If it works, everybody will hop on the train," says Les Funtleyder, a health care strategist at private equity fund Poliwogg who believes Pfizer's site will attract "fence-sitters" who are nervous about buying online.

yeah that's insane, fucking pharm. companies, if making money were a game i'd think they'd realize they had won and quit a long time ago.

you can order cialis and stuff, the actual chemicals (and analogues of them) much cheaper if you're into that kind of thing lol. I do like the idea of ordering all my meds online, hopefully without prescription, but only at reasonable prices.

but how do you know the products you order online have the correct active ingredients? There is a huge move to online now but why?? is price the sole determinant factor. Probs not.

I was on a website based in the US and it said I could actually ask a doctor online to write me an Rx for viagara, since it's not controlled, and have it sent to my house through a legit online pharmacy. Unfortunately this website didn't have controlled substances so I was a little bummed and I didn't save the website, since I'm a healthy male in my 20's I have no need for boner pills.

The reason they can charge $25 a pill is because, for the most part, insurance companies pay for it. Also medicare since a lot of the users are senior citizens. Pfizer is just milking their cash cow. It's really pathetic that in the US there are really sick people who can't afford their meds because they charge so much (and doctors are bribed to prescribe the more expensive new meds even when there are better older meds available cheaper.) If prices were set at a reasonable rate many more people would be able to get care.

Also, I would definitely call Viagra a recreational drug. It does not save lives. People take it so they can have a good time.

Totally agree Viagra is a lifestyle drug, not lifesaving. I can't imagine living in a country without a national health service. Although ours is in the process of huge privatization! :( In the UK the huge online demand for lifestyle drugs seems to be they wouldn't be given or won't ask for a prescription. Weight loss, erectile dysfunction, hair loss etc. But we've also seena huge increase in lifesaving drugs being bought online, so I'm really curious why this is happening? Are people beginning to lack trust in health care profs and self-diagnosing and medicating online. I think a lot is long term or recreational drug use too. Any thoughts from anyone would be great to chat.

Going back to counterfeit obvs for these reasons the demand is there but how do online consumers know what sellers to trust?

Disagree entirely. Read the new DitM article about Sildenafil's potential new applications.

Just because it's being used for lifestyle purposes doesn't mean it's not a life saving drug.

I've read about it's possible use in tissue (re)development. However, most consumers out there are buying it for more obvious reasons. I just wonder how much of huge amount of 'fake' stuff out there is bought and whther people care if it works??
