I certain website online that is well known for selling drugs, just started offering guns as well (not the silk road). I personally think it was the worst mistake they could have done.

I think the age of ordering RC's and illegal drugs online is coming to an end.

the assassin sites are laughable and I cant imagine anyone actually ordering a hit with them.

NSW Police will join forces with the US Secret Service to smash a blackmarket trade of guns, drugs and child pornography on the internet.

The Sunday Telegraph can reveal a newly-created Fraud and Cybercrime Squad is involved in several "live investigations" into a new wave of online crime.

Detective Superintendent Colin Dyson, commander of the squad, confirmed he met with US Secret Service officials in Washington and said a number of "common targets" had been established between the two agencies.

"Firearms, drugs, credit card data are being sold on the internet in criminal marketplaces in Australia," Mr Dyson told The Sunday Telegraph. "There are buyers and sellers in Australia right now - but they're buying and selling with offenders over-seas. It's crucial that we develop partnerships with overseas jurisdictions."

He said NSW Police were planning to work with the agency and that a number of targets in NSW had already been identified.

Central to the underground market is the use of virtual currencies, which have the capacity to eliminate traditional money trails and provide users with anonymity.

This includes Bitcoins, a legitimate currency created in 2009 which has become "the currency of choice" among criminals because of its capacity to mask transactions and money transfers.

"A number of our investigations involve payment using some form of virtual currency - Bitcoins appear to be the currency of choice," Mr Dyson said. "It's favoured so much that it has its own market price.

"Its price varies according to how often it is being bought and sold."

NSW detectives have uncovered websites and marketplaces where prohibited items or services are on offer, the most well-known being the hidden platform Silk Road.

"Silk Road is just one of those marketplaces - there are many of them," he said.

Among the more concerning platforms are those advertising "assassin sites" where individuals can offer themselves up as "hitmen" for hire.

Mr Dyson said there had been no examples of assassin services in Australia, however it was an area being watched closely for developments

They may shut it down but it will come back.

It uses onion routing offered by Tor and all chat is encrypted by PGP. Not only that but the site uses a DE-CENTRALIZED currency.. so it will be interesting if they manage to shut it down.

Long live silky roads.. haha

^ Yes, it seems there has been a proliferation of these types of online 'black markets'... I highly doubt they will be successful in shutting them all down. Maybe cause a dent or two, but that's it.

I think the other non silk road website to which you refer has stopped offering weapons for several reasons. I understand that the scene is bigger (at least in volume traded) on private forums and that there are several independent scenes within the private forums.

It's just another battlefront for them to fight all illegal trades. I don't see the point of starting new battles when you're already losing.

I avoided THAT site after they started offering weapons, plus its too open to scammers and police.
There's plenty of private invite only forums that are word of mouth so as not to worry about the more popular sites.

and I dont think the story is about silk road

Triparrr, now there's someone I haven't seen in a while.

As for this thread, yeah they'll never shut it all down, it'll get too massive. It's too easy, and too profitable.
I honestly think the online black market will eventually get so out of control, it will pretty much force legalisation.
If you can't police all the drugs in a single state, and we all know that they can't, good luck trying to police a ton of anonymous buying and selling in a modern era worldwide drug trade.

I hope your right

Legalization is not on the cards of the world agenda. These people profit to greatly from keeping their products ILLEGAL..

We are all funding the new world order through illicit drug use.. namely cocaine and heroin.

The only feasible option to completely halt sites like silk road, would be to somehow monitor all mail traffic, which I don't see happening anytime soon. And of course once that happens, there'l be a counter measure. As for face sites like silk and others, they can close the sites but they will only reopen or go further private, like email list only for w.e your needs.

I do disagree with some things that are found on onion, which i feel strongly are morally wrong and should be halted.

its like the music industry trying to fight off piratcy...

Yes they may have taken down napster.

BUT LONG LIVE PIRACY

go torrents go ;D

they will never win on this
