Guys... I have been taking stool softeners... I have been taking metamucel... like I havent shit in about 5 days...

what do you guys dol to help get this problem fixed...

I went down from 12 mg a day to 6 mg a day... I thought that would help but no.

Ok first stop taking Metamucil!! People who say to use stool bulking agents don't understand opiate constipation. Basically the bupe is drying out your stool and slowing its travel time to your anus. So I am guessing you feel like you need to go but can't push it out? If so that means there is a large dry hard piece of shit lodged at the end of the tunnel. I recommend a saline enema.

Put some lubrication (I use vaseoline) on your butt hole and the tip of the enema. Lay down and use the enema (the package will have instructions don't worry it's not painful just a little uncomfortable at first.) after you use the who.e bottle! Jump in a hot shower for a few minutes. The longer you can wait the better as your stool is absorbing the saline and getting softer. After that go push that damn thing out.

Once that is done you should feel a little better but the battle has only began. Go buy miralax and docolax from the pharmacy. Start taking them everyday along with staying extra hydrated. I'm on 120mg of methadone and as long as I take those 2 and stay hydrated I poop everyday. I wouldn't take the Metamucil unless you just totally don't eat any veggies or fruit. The Metamucil basically just. Ales your stools bigger which is great for normal constipation. But sucks for us because it ends up a hard dry mass that we have to push out!

Ditto to CJ...There is no OSFA for opiate induced constipation. Metamucil would be a HELL NO. Miralax will draw liqid into the stool, softening it for transit. There are Equate/Generic brands with the same active ingredients that are cheaper and work the same. You stir it into your drink of choice (no taste or grit) daily.

First, I would think you may need to go at this from a couple of angles, so to speak. Warm water saline enema with a little mineral oil mixed. I have to use hospital issue enema kit that holds maybe 32 oz. I have pre-existing GI issues with IBC and such, so opiates compounded the problem. I have had deadly constipation w/danger of obstruction. Morphine caused 11 days w/no bowel movement. Don't let it go past this DAY 5 for YOU.

Get the enema, stool softeners (I like Perdiem-Senna) and Dulcolax for an emergency. The Miralax will not help you today, but you need to start the regimen asap after clearing your colon.

There are prescription meds for opiate induced constipation. Linzess is a capsule formulation that works just like Miralax. Problem is cost...$258 per month. I don't have prescription coverage so I can't afford it. My doctor gave me samples, so I know it works.

Don't procrastinate, PLEASE! As CJ said, it only gets WORSE. 8o

CJ...Is the CRIMSON for ROLL TIDE? Fellow southerner here.

i just pooped yesterday and today but, it definetly wasnt all of it...

I take stool softeners everyday and was taking metamucel but i guess ill stop doing that, and go and buy miralax..

I do have enamas but it has never really worked that well...

I used to take Linzess as well. Like you said its great if you can afford it.

Roll Tide. I was living in Tuscaloosa when I created this account back in 2008. I never made it to the actual university. Got caught up in drugs and failed out of Shelton State. Which is the community college down there. But I did live in a apartment right behind Bryant Denny stadium for awhile. So it was cool I guess. When I returned to college a few years later I went to Troy. That's where I have most of my credits. I'm in Birmingham now.

I second, or third the Miralax approach, PEG (polyethylene glycol) is pretty easy to consume, it's almost tasteless. You could flavor it if you like. Buy it as a powder, mix with water, drink. That easy. Take it twice a day maybe at first. In a day or two they'll be flying right out of you. But you have to keep at it. ANd eat well if you don't. Dropping/stopping your bupe dose for a few days may work a little, but ime, it's better to just use Miralax unless you also want to permanently taper.

This advice is straight from my internist, but I'm not a physician and could have misheard something, though I doubt it.

Anyway, Miralax or a generic version! It can be pricy, but PEG is PEG, not to be confused with the food grade bulking agent/stabilizer agent PG (propylene glycol).

Oddly in my pharmacy they keep it behind the counter and in the isle where one can just pick it up, so maybe it can be gotten by prescription and thus would be cheaper b/c insurance might help pay for it. Be well, intestinal health is extremely important! Easy to ignore.

CB...Not to belabor the point, but I will, just in case. The above statement is so very true. Thanks, SBO! "Intestinal health is extremely important. Easy to ignore." I say this from place of pain and agony. I've never used recreational drugs, but I don't judge anyone who does/has. Opiate induced constipation is CONSTIPATION, whether recreational use or prescribed for PM.

If you don't feel that you fully evacuated your colon, I have the answer. Magnesium Citrate $1.25 per bottle OTC. It's clear liquid that's citrus flavored. Drink 1/2 bottle. If nothing happens in 2-3 hours, drink the rest. Stay close to the toilet and don't fall asleep without a diaper. It will CLEAN you out. My GI doc has me use this product+Dulcolax for colonoscopy prep. I can't drink the gallons of Go-Lite.

The enemas take practice, but they are NEVER preferred method. By the time it's gotten that serious for me...It's enema or ER. Right now, as I type, I KNOW I need major surgery to remove adhesions and "free" my abdominal organs. I FEAR (with this disease o'mine) that I will awaken to a colostomy bag. I refuse to submit to surgery. Sometimes I feel like the character on Rob Schneider's silly movie "Animal". He tells the sheriff that his cattle are so spooked that they "can't eat, sleep or shit...and that's all they got".

Me, too. :!

Unfortunately, I have a Pain Management specialist who does not consider the body as a whole. He shouldn't be in the field, much less the Director of the Hospital Pain Center. He's batshit crazy. I digress. He never listened to me or read my extensive medical history of complicated GI issues. I am wreaping what that fucker has sown, so to speak.

My story is LONG and disheartening, but available if you research DixiChik. My cancer surgeon told me in 1994 that my insides are mutilated by disease and my body's efforts to "heal" itself (adhesions). He basically gutted me to excise disease, put me on tumor-suppressing Megace for many years...said he'd done the best he could do. I'll never forget his saying "Your case is complicated. It can't be explained or wrapped in a pretty package with a bow. You're alive against all odds. I've done all I can do."

Way back then...Miralax did not exist for me. I had to take a lot of nasty puke-grade junk to move my bowels. I'm thinking Miralax was first made available by prescription only. It then was presented OTC. The earlier product wouldn't dissolve as well. Fast forward 2 decades, I guess. It dissolves just fine in cold or hot drink. Name brand costs $15 and change...should last the better part of a month, taken daily. I'm using the Equate (WM) brand...works fine like SBO said.

I have to make a conscious effort to maintain BMs, as "normal" for me without opiates is once or twice a week (not good). My belly gets bloated and distended, compressing my bladder. Then I can't empty it. UTIs ensue and the vicious cycle continues.

I'm too "type-ative", not a 140 character or less kind of gal. CJ...UA Tide is our arch rival in SE conference. We made Tears ROLL last year. I have to give 'em props, though. I refrain from excessive taunting because karma's a bitch...and we lost our QB. It's nice to "meet" you, as I feel like a catfish out of water here on BL. I need help with PM perspective.

I'm sorry if I've made no sense. My Dalmatian (1 of 2) Hotty died on Monday. Her sissy Toddy, my husband and I are still in shock.

Well, thank you for the compliment and for reading my post. I sometimes wonder if they don't get noticed. I would agree that Mag Citrate is a good, viable choice too. It also is said to help with things like benzo w/ds. I take capsules at the moment, two a day (total 500-mg) and it has helped my benzo taper be much more comfortable, and I use Miralax as needed for my bupe induced constipation. Some people report being fatigued when they take Mag Citrate. I'm not so sure about that, but it's certainly possible.

Miralax or Citric Acid, find what works and keep those pipes cleaned out! As the above poster has clearly laid out, intestinal issues are a bitch and they can sneak up on you, seems more so if you're a male.

I don't find Miralax to be as fast hitting as CA is said to be... but I don't take enough to know from experience, so maybe the diaper is a good idea. Either way it's a shitty situation.

Sorry, couldn't resist the easy pun.

I'm quite sympathetic to the loss of your furry friend. I'm always devastated when I loose one of my precious labradors, my best friends. I believe the hurt is all the joy over the years inverted, a cruel joke by our maker.

anytime I feel I havent shit in a few days all I do is wait a bit rather than take the bupe at the same time as I normally would.

I take 12MG/day; coming down from 16MG/day just a month or so back. I take the full 12MG around 9AM every morning. if I feel I havent shit in a day or two I will wake up that AM and just wait till around 12/1PM before taking the bupe; usually within that 4/5 hour span I will end up taking a shit, lol. I am sure its not that easy for everyone but its something that I always did even while shooting dope; I would always end up taking a shit early afternoon if I never used that AM.

btw, this is also why I think its better to take the full MG of bupe in the AM rather than two different times; you are blocking your asshole a bit more by doing that, ha. well, at least thats how I am looking at it and I could easily be wrong and full of shit, get it!? I am full of shit, lol. sorry, I just cracked myself up right there.

^ You have times you dont shit for a FEW DAYS??? Holy shit!

I often used a combination of mirilax, magnesium citrate, and probiotics (just to keep everything healthy down there)

I used to hate that it was like a minor avalanche in my toilet everytime I was able to finally shit.

There's. New drug on the market designed specifically for opiate induced consti
Action called methyl naltrexone. It knocks the opiates off the receptors outside your brain. Basically putting your body I to withdrawal without your brain going into withdrawal. So you get the withdrawal shots without the misery. I want to try it but it's still super expensive and my doc won't prescribe it because he's a moron who doesn't keep up with drugs that pharm reps don't tell him about over doughnuts.
