They are looking at Blood Oxygen and reading it as lower means depressed activity, rather than lower means consumed more oxygen.

Anyway, that is too slow a metric to determine definitive meanings for events that are happening at 1 second and less.

I wish someone would invent a good electroencephalograph to show the wave propagation from sensory excitation.
If they did that they would see something interesting (eg. longer fadeout of signal pulse trains)
