YANGON, Myanmar -- A Buddhist monk has been arrested in Myanmar after authorities found more than 4 million methamphetamine pills in his car and in his monastery, police said Tuesday.

Officer Maung Maung Yin said the monk was stopped Sunday as he drove in northern Rakhine state, which borders Bangladesh. Authorities had been tipped off that the monk was carrying an illegal haul.
Maung Maung Yin said an anti-drug task force found 400,000 pills in the monk’s car. A subsequent search of his monastery turned up 4.2 million pills along with a grenade and ammunition. A statement from the office of Myanmar’s leader, State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, said that one million kyats ($769) in cash was also found in the vehicle.

Myanmar is a major producer of methamphetamine, usually smuggled from the northeast to neighboring countries. It is also the world’s second biggest producer of opium, from which heroin is derived.
“This is not a normal case, and when we were informed that the monk was arrested, we were all shocked,” said Kyaw Mya Win, a township police officer.
Asked about the case, the director general of the Religious Affairs Ministry, Soe Min Tun, acknowledged some surprise.
“It is not a very common case, but not impossible to happen. What will happen to the monk is that he will have to give up his monkhood right away and face trial as an ordinary person,” he said.
Police said they were still questioning the monk Tuesday.
Last year, Myanmar officials seized 21 million methamphetamine pills with a street value around $35.5 million near the border with China in the biggest such seizure in recent memory.

Maybe he had it in case he needed to get rid of the stuff very quickly?

Someone should teach that guy some mindfulness and meditation exercises ;)

Pretty crazy. there's a post in the Drugs In The Media thread in case you wanted to discuss it.

Yeah that is really really odd.

Buddhism preaches non-attachment to material pleasures/excess, as well as non-violence, so the idea that a buddhist monk would not only have so much meth but also grenades as they mentioned (I mean why on earth would a MONK want a grenade??!!) is just nuts.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that this particular monk isn't too far along on the path to enligtenment...:(

Kind of sad, because I don't like most religions, but have so much respect for buddhists and have thought of trying to learn more about buddhism and zen and meditation.

So many people who practice these kinds of religions/philosophies/practices are able to bring about real change, not only in themselves but others as well, so it sort of shatters my vision of a buddhist monk to see him do this.

I mean we are all used to corrupt priests and what not, but not so much this...

The state of Myanmar can now peddle it to someone thus increasing the state coffers. Good source of revenue. More tourists heading to the place since its since recent opening up and thus catching up with the trend in south east asia. Hoping to emulate Siam.

Fabulous looking country. Bagan if anyone is interested.
Golden Triangle would be worth an adventure to.

Wasn't there a big story about Jewish rabbis smuggling cocaine out of Brazil? Religion does provide an excellent cover.
