He lights a cigarette.
The deed is done.
One more notch
in the bedpost.

She wants to have him near.
He turns away cold, uncaring.

She wonders what she did wrong.
It isn't the first time
a woman has sought affection
through improper channels.

He promises them the world
when he doesn't have but
the dirt under his fingernails.

There's no room for affection
here-only deflection.
She'll ask him, "Why are you single?"
He deflects her attention.

He hastens her out the door.
He got what he wanted.
He needs her no more.
Like a cheap whore...

She leaves and finally sees
him for what he is:
Dorian Gray in a
Prince Charming mask.

She goes home, showers the regret
down the drain, cries herself to sleep.
He lays in a cold, dark room.
Alone.
