Yeah you can't see the moon over the sun except for the moments when it's total because the remaining sunlight blinds you to everything else, unless you have sun viewing glasses, in which case ALL you can see through them is an orange light for the sun, and you can actually see the shape of it, including the parts of it that are blocked.

Yeah I actually stared at the sun for a few (without solar glasses, EGAD!!) and noticed the sun was actually a crescent and there was a more dull spot in front but I had to stare at it long enough to get a headache before I could make it out
