I don't go to raves, but I do party a few times a year and have been extremely interested in giving light shows. I picked up poi last summer and have been practicing liquid and 'gloving' almost religiously now for a little over a month or so. I'm going to my next big party at the end of June and definitely want to give some light shows and spin some poi. I guess I'm just asking for some help and advice because it will be my first time giving light shows other than to my cat and my girlfriend and I'm a lil nervous.

Thanks in advance :)

Glover here.

My biggest advice would be to just be yourself. Don't try to be something your not. There are gonna be people who are better then you. A LOT BETTER. But you really shouldn't sweat it. I've been gloving since the 1st or so of December and just now do i have what i consider a style of my own.

Trade shows with someone you admire if you know any other glovers. Anyone who isn't an asshole will tell you what they like and what could be improved, especially if you do the same for them. The more you stress about being good the more forced it will seem. That's my experience at least.

What's the scene like in NV anyway?

mirrors are awesome for poi and glove stuff.... It helps to be able to see yourself when you practice....

But just try to go in time with the music....

Fire poi if you feel competent with it, really the flames are big, loud, hot, and your going to be at least a little intimidated the first time but its impressive.....

I got my friends addicted to poi.... They sat around, smoked a bunch of pot, and practiced poi hardcore for 2 weeks and were comfortable doing fire and they did....

socks with tennis balls > glow sticks on strings....

if you don't want to spend much money just get tennis balls and put them in some longer socks and they will stretch... they have more weight and don't hurt as bad as plastic...

Poi is more of a spectator thing.... lightshows are a little more personal... The last lightshow i had was from the girl im falling in love with if thats any indication.....

Thanks for the help and tips I'll definitely use them...

@ amoan: The scene in northern NV is pretty sad. I feel as though the crowd out here is not really my style so I really don't go out to raves at all. I do go to burning man though which is the best party in the world. The burner parties out here are pretty cool though, also expensive but I try to make those when I have extra cash. So my parties this summer will be EDC and Burning Man.

@jamaica: I Love fire poi! I have lit up a few times and it's fucking exhilarating. I have some glow poi I bought and practice with but they're pretty cheap.

Thanks once again!

helpful hint....

find the promoter throwing the parties you go to and ask something along the lines of "i do fire poi, guest list me and i will spin fire"

party for free or maybe get paid, and you get permission to spin fire at a party....

Thats assuming your competent enough to put on a decent show.... I feel comfortable doing fire myself but im not crazy impressive.... Still need to get thread the needle and windmills....

That's a really helpful hint. I'm definitely going to try that out.

Hint for the windmill, move your wrist in the figure 8 in front of you like if you were doing a corkscrew, then raise your arms up over your head and keep doing the figure 8 motion with your wrist.

I live in Dallas so the scene here is exactly the way I like it. It's about half and half of etards and normal people. Hardly any kandi chain mail sixteen year old "bisexuals" who hate their parents. Oh did I mention they are vegans too because animals are too kawaii to hurt desu ne~~

I'm hittin up EDC as well.

it's funny that you brought this up cuz people at my school do this stuff with their hands. They listen to techno and they're all giving lightshows... but just practicing. It's cool to see people doing it, not that it looks cool but just shows more people are getting into light shows and stuff, which is really cool to see when they have the real light show gloves or whatever they're caleld.

I am very very picky with recieveing light shows , I got an amazing glove show from a young kid at ultra .. best advice is know your music and go along with it while giving your show. I hate when idiots just wave light in my face
