The other day something really fucked with me.
I hadn't smoked (larger amounts) of weed in a while, maybe a month and id always smoked with a pipe or joint. So my mate and I decided to make a bong and smoke a fair bit.
When i got to my last cone (BIG cone), I started to pull and all of a sudden my brain felt as thought it teared in half. The pain was sharp and was there for just a second but it really rattled me. Does anyone have any idea what might of caused this?
I then got a fairly strong sense of derealisation got super high and forgot who my friend was momentarily hahahaha.

Additional info:

  • Used a jet lighter
  • A foil cone piece, hose stem and plastic bottle
  • Been having troubles with derealisation and anxiety while sober before and after (linked?)
  • Also remember snorting a bit of No Doz plus (caffeine) hours before and then putting some under my tongue maybe 30 minutes before.

Torn in half? Kind of like a really hot line of stinging pain that jolts down the center of your head, almost like electricity?

Or was it more of a strange muscle pull, that left part of your head with a sensation that lies somewhere in-between having a numb hand and having your hand fall asleep (only on your skull)?

Either way, idk what causes it. I've experienced both before. The former seems like a flash headache-- hits like a migraine and is gone within a minute or two.

The latter happens when I'm dehydrated and turn or tilt my head too quickly. I turn my head, feel something pop and shift (kind of like a tendon forcing itself over another, only in the back of my head), a quick jolt of intense pain and then the back of my head goes half-numb for a good 15-30min.

Ya know, I never really worried about either before, but now that you've had me type it all out it sounds really, really fucked up.

[EDIT: From medhelp, not sure if it'll help or not:

Thanks for using the forum. I am happy to address your questions, and my answer will be based on the information you provided here. Please make sure you recognize that this forum is for educational purposes only, and it does not substitute for a formal office visit with your doctor.

Without the ability to review your medical history and examine you personally, it is difficult for me to give you a diagnosis. Whether or not a headache is concerning depends on whether or not you usually get headaches (a very painful headache that lasts for more than a few hours in a person who usually does not experience headaches is usually concerning. If someone often experiences headaches, and their headache is not too different from their usual headaches, it is likely the headache is not concerning etc. However, taking a history and doing a physical examination are very important in assessing a patient with headaches).

There are a number of possible causes that come to mind given the description you have provided above, a popping sensation in your neck followed by neck pain and headache and face and eye discomfort.

Causes of neck pain associated with headache are cervicogenic headache and occipital neuralgia.

Cervicogenic headache is a headache that is "referred" to the head from bony structures, muscles, and other soft tissue in the neck and shoulders. Symptoms are usually one-sided and include: precipitation of head pain by neck movement or awkward neck positions, head pain when external pressure is applied to the neck or occipital region, restricted range of motion of the neck, and neck, shoulder and arm pain. Treatment for cervicogenic headache includes physical therapy, medications, behavioral therapy, and other modalities.

Occipital neuralgia is caused by irritation or injury to two nerves that run from the upper neck to the back of the head. The irritation could be due to neck trauma, pinching of the nerves (by muscles or arthritis), and other causes. Symptoms include a piercing sharp pain that travels from the upper neck to the back of the head and behind the ears. It is usually a one sided pain but can be on both sides of the head. Treatment includes physical therapy, medications, and in some cases injections, "nerve blocks", during which a physician injects the irritated nerves with an anesthetic.

A concerning cause of neck pain associated with headache is a dissection: a small tear in the blood vessels that travel up the neck to the brain. This can occur spontaneously in people with certain conditions that affect the blood vessels, after neck trauma, or after chiropractic manipulation of the neck. The pain is often but not always associated with some sort of neurologic deficit as a dissection can often lead to a stroke.

I suggest that if your neck pain/ headache persists and/or becomes more severe, and/or if you develop neurologic signs like weakness on one side of the body, slurring of speech, double vision, difficulty speaking, and so on that you be seen immediately by a doctor. If you frequently experience headaches or neck pain and are not finding relief, evaluation by a neurologist, and perhaps a headache specialist, might be helpful for you.

Well, I mean, if you think the weed caused it then it's for sure a good thing that you stopped smoking for the moment.

The drug's not dangerous, but it can definitely get unpleasant enough to make a person think their health is in jeopardy. Adverse reactions can also depends on your personal health/fitness level, body chemistry, basic diet..... all types of shit.

Whenever I'm having a bad drug-related experience like this, I tend to just lay down (or fall back, depending on the furniture), close my eyes, and try to imagine a single point, like a tunnel with pitch blackness at the end of it instead of a light. It doesn't always work in getting rid of the headache, but it often throws me into a pretty quick sleep when I just try to focus on a that single point, thoughts clear and trying to blot out the headache. The toughest part, though? Clearing my thoughts. That's what my anxiety's based on and the pain makes it go into panic-mode if I can't hit my zen switch. I feel like that's the key for everyone who finds themselves in this type of situation-- the... their own personal "zen switch."

For me, I just try to imagine nothingness, I guess you could call it. Sensory deprivation without a chamber, though that's hard to do when it feels like your skull's splitting in two and all you have is willpower to ride it out.

When that doesn't work? Heavy bag, no gloves until my knuckles are hurt enough for me to focus on something else. THEN I lay down and try to sleep, probably smoking a bowl to help the process or taking a 5mg melatonin pill. Every punch, though.... Sometimes it feels like I'm hitting myself in the head, the way my head hurts when I connect.... Eh.... maybe I'm a masochist, fuck if I know.

Headaches can be a bitch..... consider yourself lucky that you only had a quick flash of one, if it can even be called a headache. The worst ones feel like an eternity of hell... the ringing, the pulsing, throbbing, searing sensations, dim lights feeling like supernovas on your eyes, the smallest of sounds turning into deafening rumbles, hearing strange high-pitched frequencies off and on that make you feel like you're going crazy....

If you don't feel any of that shit, then I wouldn't worry too much, brutha.

Fuck dude that sounds heavy, I mean im getting a quart soon and ill ease back into it, i've never had troubles before (since I was 14). On another note you seem to know about the anxiety im going through, for some reason i think im going to die, at any moment all the time? and i dont even feel real anymore but thanks bro have a good one

I can't really help anyone treat their anxiety.

I often can relate to the topic, but I'm not the person to look towards for advice on how to overcome it. Everyone's triggers are different, as are their reactions to anxiety and stress. All I know is how I think and, from what I've gathered throughout my 27 years on this Earth, my mind's always seemed absolutely chaotic compared to how I perceive those of the people around me.

The only advice I can offer in good conscience is to seek professional help if you feel anxiety's having too much of a negative impact on your quality of life. Don't self-medicate, don't try to compartmentalize, don't isolate yourself-- look someone in their eyes and talk to them about it.

Anything else I can think of at the moment would only be a temporary (though alprazolam is quite effective, but temporary nonetheless) solution to a permanent problem.

well it could very well have something to do with the fact that youre using a jet lighter on a foil bowl and plastic bottle, probably producing vapors from both and those are terrible for you.

OP. From a musculoskeletal perspective, where my expertise lies...there are a few aspects the situation as described that may have lead to your pain

Ripping bongs is much more of a forced inspiration as opposed to joints or pipes...you have to use your accessory breathing muscles as well as your diaphragm in order to suck that fucker through. Ingesting stimulants (like snorting NO-Doze) has the potential to upset the efficient use of these muscles by creating tension...particularly in the upper trapezius (scapula riding up towards the head and neck) and in the muscles of mastication (jaw clenching). Trying to rip a bong down whilst tense like this means other muscles have to do a job they werent built for...this is where things go wrong and shit can get painful. Spinal alignment can be affected, causing nerve compression. Incorrect pressure balances in visceral structures are another possibility.

So it is possible that physical factors in your method of smoking, not the substance it's self, that may be responsible for "tearing your brain in half".

Just relax, breathe easy, try not rip bongs down too hard...especially if you've been on the stims...

Best of wishes fellow Aussie - Keep rocking the Powerade bongs but in the interests of your long term health i suggest picking yourself up a metal stem and conie -- hose and foil contain combustibles that enter your lungs with the weed smoke...Which is ok in the occasional time of desperation, but definitely not for long term use.

Hard to say but could easily have to do with that terrible set-up which is likely giving you cancer.

You should be smoking on something made entirely of glass. End of story. If you can't afford it smoke RAW papers or something similar.

Foil? Gross. Hose? Gross. Jet lighter? Gross. Plastic bottle? Gross.

Hahahaha thanks yeah it must be how I smoked it because now I have a glass bowl and it's great not brain splitting

I'm glad! Didn't mean to be harsh but in addition to the pain it must have been ruining the taste of your herb. Hope you like the new setup
