Get a microscope and look at the crystals on the bud. The crystals will start to stand up and look like a ball with a tail on it rather than just a ball. Depending on how you like your bud, some of these will start to turn gold.
Other signs of ripeness are the hairs turning from white to yellow/gold, the buds stop growing in size and fill out. IME deciding when the plant is ripe and not over ripe is one of the more difficult aspects and comes with experience.
Google search for images or buy a book that shows comparisons of the two and then use a microscope of magnified glass and compare how ripe buds look to yours.
