Depends what muscle you are talking about.
I've only ever im'd in the top of my leg and in the ass cheek. For either of those I'd go in at least an inch. You basically need to get past the fatty tissue. Maybe different for a small muscle but as far as I know the bigger muscles are better to use.
There is plenty of guides on this site or online in general.
Be sure to be sterile and filter properly - it's way easier to get an abscess from im than iv

Yea i know all about im abcess no fun at all and okay a 5/16ths needle is at le a st an inch sounds good to me

For the Deltoids - 1 Inch

For The Quads / Glutes (Upper leg or upper outer quadrant of butt cheek - 1.5 inches is recommended). - 1.5 inches
