How hard is it to grow Shrooms and what do you need?

Ok, so I've never really considered growing shrooms because I've always assumed it was probably very difficult.

I guess the main reason I've assumed this is that I've known lots of people who liked them but I've never known anyone who grew them and I figured there must be a reason behind that.

I've heard a lot of people complain that they wish they had access to shrooms and with the spores being legal (this is correct isn't it?) I don't understand why everyone and their brother isn't growing them.

So, a few questions:

1) I have never grown anything before ever and I know nothing about growing plants or fungi. So, for someone with no experience is it relatively easy?

2) Are the spores 100% legal in the U.S.?

3) What materials would I need if I wanted to grow them and approximately how expensive would they be?

4) Why do you think more people don't grow mushrooms with them being so popular?

5) Is there anything else I should know if I wanted to grow mushrooms?


I wouldn't say there's a good chance that I am going to try to do this right now, but I'm still curious.
