(answered) Gif avatars allowed?

I've read the SUPPORT FAQ re: avatars but it didn't mention gifs. So I assumed they were allowed. But they don't work as gifs using either custom avatar option 1 or 2

they work fine as long as they're proper animated gifs and they're under the avatar size limit.
