Four-year-old critical after 'drinking the drug GHB'

A four-year-old girl is in a critical condition in Albury Hospital after police suspect she drank the illegal drug GHB from a plastic water bottle.

Emergency services were called to reports of a sick girl at a home in Albury on the New South Wales-Victorian border on Friday night.

She was rushed to the local hospital where she remains in a critical condition, police said.

Officers seized two plastic water bottles containing the GHB from the home, and arrested a 30-year-old man.

He has since been charged with possessing a prohibited drug and has been granted bail.

Police said further charges could be laid, and he is due to face court later this month.

GHB has a high risk of overdose according to the Alcohol and Drug Foundation.

"It's very easy to take too much GHB - the difference between the amount needed to get high and the amount that causes an overdose can be hard to judge," the website states.

Officers from the Department of Family and Community Services have been notified of the incident.

She will be fine as long as she wasn't deprived of oxygen for too long.
