Sky Captain And The World of Tomorrow

Saw it this weekend and was very impressed with this
Visually this film is VERY cool
The whole movie has a 1950's Gotham City/Metropolis/retro feel to it
It felt like I was watching an old comic book
The use of light and shadows is excellent
Everything in this film is computer generated aside from the actors, actresses and a few foreground props
All of the scenes were shot on a green screen set which is probably why the actors seemed a little detached from the action at times
I felt Paltrow's performance lacked emotion, but other than that I was very entertained
Very original, stylish and cool...plus Angelina Jolie looks hot in her uniform!

It was okay. I'll give him credit for trying something really different.

I think there were a lot of dialog problems, though. Not stylistically - just basic flow problems. The bickering of the two lead characters failed as banter, and wasn't charged enough to be flirtation.

Also, in the entire history of film, the phrase "What took you so long?" has NEVER worked. Not once.

I enjoyed it, but I was glad it wasn't any longer than it was.

I would have done things a little differently, but otherwise I loved it. I'm a huge fan of the "Pulp" genre, and the whole artistic quality it portrays through a singular vision of what the creator wanted. I, for one, am suprised they even let him make this film, after all it took him over ten years from initial start, and this release was the third version of it. Personally I think this guy could be the new Speilburg, if he plays his cards right, and starts throwing out quality work in this way.

Nothing beats AI though for visual quality. Not even "I, Robot".

Great flick.

It reminded me a lot of Metropolis, the sci-fi classic from the 1920s. To its credit, Sky Captain did not overly do the characters as caricatures thing, and thus there was even some character development. Still, the emphasis is mostly on style rather than substance. Admittedly, the story is a bit thin at points. However, the visuals are just so cool that it's hard to notice the things that are lacking. And bonus points for working in a role for Laurence Olivier.

I thought it was horrible. Some good visuals, but weak story, horrible dialogue and terrible acting. Paltrow was absolute shit in this; the fact that the actors had to shoot most of it in front of a blue screen was a major detraction as they rarely ever seemed to be fully engaged in what was going on around them. Lots of flashy visuals but little real subtsance made this an unentertaining piece of shit in my opinion.

I loved it, the visuals were incredible. The style was amazing. Of course the story came up short..but i think the story.. and the style achieved what it intended to. I'd see it again..

I loved it. And I thought the acting was decent and the story decent as well. This was supposed to be a fun, imaginitive Indiana Jones type adventure and the story/acting/dialogue fit that goal well imo. I also thought the chemistry btwn. paltrow and sky captain was good even though everyone else here seems to think otherwise. And of course it was visually awesome.

I saw this yesterday. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the setting. Anything circa WWI I find very aesthetically pleasing - the clothing, the style, the architecture - just beautiful. I also have a zeppelin fetish of sorts.

That said, I agree that it had some serious dialogue issues.

I meant to give it a 4/5 but mistakenly did a 5/5... oh well :).

Thank you for reminding me... I had this sitting in my room for years and never got to see it.
