Drugs for Shyness/Anxiety

DJ_Kaotic & polyorchid: I think that when you realise SAD is holding you back (such as preventing you getting a job), that's when you know you've got nothing to lose by seeking help. Put it this way, nothing the Dr can do to you will be as bad as your day to day anxiety, and once you have managed to blurt it out, the anxiety will start decreasing. If you check out the web, you will find specialist programs for SAD.
SAD is still not a well known disorder - I believe the diagnosis has existed for only about 10 years. I urge anyone struggling with SAD to seek some help, as with a little work you could be feeling a whole lot better, and moving forward in life instead of being paralysed by anxiety.
I'm happy for people to email me too.

Thanks for all the replies, guys (and gals)...it's always good hearing other people's experiences.
As for me, I've decided not to use benzo's or any other drugs for the time being. I think that getting dependant on them will not help my problem in the long run. Besides, I've seen some changes in my personality ever since I posted my question; feeling less anxious, more talkative, showing more "personality"...so I'm going to try to build on this new feeling and further push myself out of my comfort zones. Baptism by fire! Wish me luck, and I hope everyone else with the same problem finds a solution that works for you.

I suggest to anyone who is being recommended SSRI's to look at other reasons that may make you anxious.
I was recently perscribed the SSRI Paroxtine for a gastric complaint by a gastroenterolist (sp?). I rejected the advice and started taking another avenue with my normal doctor. I had blood tests done and it seems that I have lots of allergies. Allergies can be a big factor in amplifying anxiety.
