It's safer than IV for obvious reasons. If you do it properly then it can be almost as effective as with IV.
You need to make sure your rectum is empty of any poo which will absorb your stuff. Only put the syringe in about an inch and a half and only dissolve the pill(s) in 1-2ml water.
Very simple to do and with a much higher bioavailability than oral or nasal.
