Doof party tragedy: Deadly batch of drugs killed Nimbin man Jake Monahan, left friend Levi Wone clinging to life
ON New Year’s Day two childhood friends popped some pills at a rave. Now one is dead, the other fighting for his life.
Jake Monahan, 26, one of three ravers affected by the drugs at the Mt Lindesay camping and music party, went into cardiac arrest on Saturday and could not be revived.
A 29-year-old from Clothiers Creek was released from Gold Coast University Hospital on Tuesday, but Levi Wone, a lifelong friend of Mr Monahan, is still undergoing treatment.
His condition has been upgraded to stable after a period on life support.
The 25-year-old and Mr Monahan grew up together in the hippy town of Nimbin.
Growing up on the same street, the two were inseparable as teens, enjoying parties and working on cars together.

The close-knit community is in mourning for Mr Monahan and praying Mr Wone recovers.
Mr Wone’s family have been too distraught to speak and are spending their days by his side.
Nimbin locals have begun fundraising for Mr Monahan’s funeral and have held “smoking ceremonies” in the main street in honour of the boys.
One local, who would not be named, said there had been a divide with some locals blaming the boys for taking the unknown drugs.
“There has been so much bad coverage like ‘Jake and Levi both deserved what happened to them’, which is so unfair and heartless,” the local said.

“Those guys thought they were buying stuff that wasn’t what they were told it was and who would wish death on anyone.
“They are young people experimenting, like practically all young people do across the globe — whether you live in Nimbin or not.
“As we all know Nimbin has a mighty big reputation, nobody cares about Nimbin kids, no sympathy for Nimbin kids — it’s breaking the community’s heart.”
Mr Monahan’s mother, Leiza Monahan, thanked those who are helping her through the toughest time in her life.
“I wanted to thank everyone for all the kind words of love and support,” she wrote on a Nimbin community Facebook page.
“I am so grateful that I live in a community where so many people went out of their way to make things a little less painful.”
Toxicology results have not been made public, but police have vowed to crack down on “bush doofs”.
Detective Chief Inspector Brendan Cullen said secret “doof” parties were happening too often in rural areas.
“These particular parties aren’t about the music, they’re all about getting high on illicit drugs,” he said.
“People go there to get intoxicated, some overdose and die unfortunately.
“They are not good events and we need help from the public to stop them.”
