Doof party tragedy: Deadly batch of drugs killed Nimbin man Jake Monahan, left friend Levi Wone clinging to life

ON New Year’s Day two childhood friends popped some pills at a rave. Now one is dead, the other fighting for his life.

Jake Monahan, 26, one of three ravers affected by the drugs at the Mt Lindesay camping and music party, went into cardiac arrest on Saturday and could not be revived.

A 29-year-old from Clothiers Creek was released from Gold Coast University Hospital on Tuesday, but Levi Wone, a lifelong friend of Mr Monahan, is still undergoing treatment.

His condition has been upgraded to stable after a period on life support.

The 25-year-old and Mr Monahan grew up together in the hippy town of Nimbin.

Growing up on the same street, the two were inseparable as teens, enjoying parties and working on cars together.

The close-knit community is in mourning for Mr Monahan and praying Mr Wone recovers.

Mr Wone’s family have been too distraught to speak and are spending their days by his side.

Nimbin locals have begun fundraising for Mr Monahan’s funeral and have held “smoking ceremonies” in the main street in honour of the boys.

One local, who would not be named, said there had been a divide with some locals blaming the boys for taking the unknown drugs.

“There has been so much bad coverage like ‘Jake and Levi both deserved what happened to them’, which is so unfair and heartless,” the local said.

“Those guys thought they were buying stuff that wasn’t what they were told it was and who would wish death on anyone.

“They are young people experimenting, like practically all young people do across the globe — whether you live in Nimbin or not.

“As we all know Nimbin has a mighty big reputation, nobody cares about Nimbin kids, no sympathy for Nimbin kids — it’s breaking the community’s heart.”

Mr Monahan’s mother, Leiza Monahan, thanked those who are helping her through the toughest time in her life.

“I wanted to thank everyone for all the kind words of love and support,” she wrote on a Nimbin community Facebook page.

“I am so grateful that I live in a community where so many people went out of their way to make things a little less painful.”

Toxicology results have not been made public, but police have vowed to crack down on “bush doofs”.

Detective Chief Inspector Brendan Cullen said secret “doof” parties were happening too often in rural areas.

“These particular parties aren’t about the music, they’re all about getting high on illicit drugs,” he said.

“People go there to get intoxicated, some overdose and die unfortunately.

“They are not good events and we need help from the public to stop them.”

This is not good for the doof community at all. I have been to hundreds of doofs. Never a problem. Never a fight. Never a death. Some not well organised with no medical help. Some with trained doctors and nurses on site. Depends on the size and if money is involved. Most people take acid and the acid in the doof community is of a very high standard. Always has been at least in Northern New South Wales. I am no longer doofing due to a major location change but i really think violence in pubs is a far bigger issue. Assaults galore and more deaths involved whether instant or long term from the effects of binge drinking.

The nnsw doof scene has been a train wreck for five years or more.

Never a problem? Never a fight? Never a death? You've been away for too long consumer

This particular scene has had big issues with meth, out of control teens starting fights and robbing people at so called doof events for so long that many of my friend refuse to cross the border to attend events down there. (I know strictly speaking this event was on the qld side of the border but it was very much the same crew that have lost their way).

Even after this death there were people complaining of stuff being stolen from their camp sites at this event. 20 yr ago this sort of thing was unheard of. I predicted a long time ago that doofs were too big and too unregulated, actually in the doof thread in the old Aus social forum. Events are going to become smaller and more exclusive to eliminate the attention from the police.

The Facebook page for this event was taken down almost immediately but it is a perfect example of how organisers have very little control on who gets invited. It was pretty much the only doof on over nye so of course there were going to be many random attending We are talking about kids barely 20 yr old in some cases trying to run parties of a 1000 people with mates acting as security and running the first aid tent. I'm not suggesting that the scene should close its doors to new members, however it is difficult to foster a community of like minded souls like the good old days when there are so many kids who are reckless and looking to get wrecked showing up to these events.

Yeah, out door sound system party that mostly caters to psy (psychedelic trance) music.

My mate who still goes to some around the shire and out skirts has told me about more and more violence from what he said it's mostly people who are into ice, but I dont know, I dont go anymore.

I used to go to raves and doofs in the early 90's in Syd in warehouses, abandoned buildings, national parks, state forests etc etc. Back then it was mostly people on acid or pills or some powder like speed or k and it was pretty peaceful. These days I think i'd feel safer going to some of the pubs than the forest doofs from what I've heard about some of the gatherings and people who goto them. My mate was saying most of the trouble comes from groups of people who rock up (mostly) from nimbin, casino, lismore etc and just wont to punch on and trash the place.

Sounds fucked.

You are right OTW. I have been away for a long time and the parties i went too were mainly for the over 30's. Everything you say is true though.

That's pretty much the scene around nnsw unfortunately. Add to that the local police and councils have these events pegged as public enemy number one and it's looking dire.

Head an hour or two north and the SEQ scene is a little smaller but definitely without the same issues. Then again there are few music/dance events of any genre that isn't effected by the explosion of different chemicals out there and their easy availability.

Like you said it was easy when it was only pure(ish) MDMA pills and LSD to worry about. Whispers I heard is that these three guys were on "flakka " or a-pvp, either intentionally or thinking it was ice perhaps. Either way strong amphetamines are not really keeping with the old school hippy doof vibe. It's a shame because I have great memories of my first doofs camping and tripping in a community of peaceful souls from different walks of life. Then again I also have great memories of raves in predominantly gay night clubs before they were taken over by mainstream "lads"

You think if there was a "batch of deadly drugs" more than two people would have run into complications.

Maybe those two guys mixed a bunch of shit with some pills? I mean if they were friends (past tense :|) maybe they done a lethal combo of drugs in there tent or something togather?

I really want to know what was in the pills, just out of curiosity.

Amazing how when quality drugs go around the scene is peaceful and no one overdoses.

Now too many assholes have ruined it by flooding cheap substituted crap without giving two shits about the end user. Then again the government doesn't either when it comes to alcohol etc.

So sad :(

Yeah i totally agree again. The early doofs i went to were at the epicentre in Byron that no longer exists. Those parties were legendary. I broke my rave virginity at a Sleaze Ball and was lucky enough to attend one of the last RAT parties in Sydney. It seems a life time ago.

RIP the Doof scene

Im assuming these parties are not exactly legal or sanctioned. why don't the police come break them up?

if you tried something like that anywhere in the us...i don't care how remote, you would have cops there within an hour ending the fun

Yeah they do a fair bit of the time, put when they are on private land and there isn't any sound complaints sometimes they don't need to. It's not exactly easy to remove 1,000 people who are mostly off their heads sometimes in the middle of a dark night.

"not exactly easy"....would never stop american police from arresting as many people as they possibly can
