Crystallizing MDMA the easy way

So I've read the threads on boiling alcohol dissolving and slow cooling and all that, but a friend of mine told me he just stirs it in with a little vodka and lets it sit over night and it turns his powder to crystals. The weird thing though is, it also makes them like a dirty black color, even though the powder was white at first. Any ideas how to fix this? Use rubbing alcohol or something more pure?
