Cannabis started inducing seizures?

Hey everyone, I wanted to see if anyone else had experience with this by chance. I've been a heavy user for the last couple years. I had a few seizures in class in 2010, which totally disappeared until last December (four since December), so four years. I've never had any issues with cannabis before, but the past few times I've smoked it I've felt like a seizure was coming on until I came down. My last seizure actually occurred while I had been smoking, which was quite a surprise as it has always done the opposite. I've also taken LSD, psilocybin mushrooms, DMT, DXM, xanax, and alcohol in the past year. I never once had the feeling of a seizure while on ANY of these substances, which blows my mind because you would think psychedelics and benzos in particular would cause one.

Wrapping up, I feel like I'm going to have a seizure whenever I smoke now, no substance ever caused me to have one or feel like I was going to have one. Has anyone else had a problem or know someone with a similar problem?

Quick edit...I started smoking about a year or so after I had my first seizures.

Cannabis is used to treat people people with epilepsy, and is used to stopped grand mal seizures INSTANTLY. Right now in the news it's been a controversial subject with people treating their kids with cannabis, but it's really effective.

I'm no doctor, but I don't think cannabis is what's causing your seizures. People are using it as a preventive medicine, as well as using it to stop the seizures immediately. With a quick google search you can find tons of information and stories from reputable sources.

Even Texas, who is known to be a state with really tough laws and no tolerance for drugs, has recently passed a law to allow cannabis to be used for epilepsy patients. Here's the article from just two days ago...

I have certainly heard of synthetic cannabinoids causing seizures but never natural pot. But Anything can cause seizures really. My sister is epileptic and exercise causes seizures for her which was a big disappointment because she enjoyed running but she realised in time that the running was causing her seizures(she doesn't flop and shake around like a Grand Mal, she has some other kind of epileptic fit that I don't know a lot about)

I may've misread but I don't think cannabis has actually caused a seizure in the OP, smoking just makes him feel the onset of one.

The weed could just be fucking with his head but I don't play with seizures. They scare the fuck out of me when I see a person or an animal in the middle of one.

If it were me I'd try to talk it out with my doctor.

Cannabinoids are known to lower GABA levels in the brain, which I believe is thought to be why synthetic cannabinoid cause seizures in overdose. It wouldn't be surprising if lowering inhibitory neurotransmission in the brain could provoke feelings similar to the onset of a seizure. Cannabis may be becoming popular for treating seizures at the moment as well, but that doesn't mean that it is incapable of causing a seizure in the right people. Benzos are used to cause sedation and hypnotic effects but they are well known for having paradoxical effects and suddenly becoming stimulating and psychotic in certain individuals. There is no medicine that works well for every person even with the same condition, and what works well for someone could be hurtful to another. Personally, I get full-body tremors whenever I smoke too much cannabis, which takes quite a lot these days, but it occasionally happens. It's never felt like it alone could be enough to cause a seizure, but it has been strong enough that it feels like it could've if I was already at risk for having one. It's good to know the public stats but don't just go by what everyone tells you either, no one knows your body like you do. It may just be a coincidence, but I know that if it was me, after actually having a seizure while high, at least for the moment I would be very cautious about what I did. I would at least talk to a trusted doctor about it, as the internet is not a suitable source of medical advice.

I've never heard of cannabis causing seizures, CBD is being used to treat them.

Other drugs you have taken are known for causing seizures in withdrawal, if you used xanax, dxm or alcohol regularly then stopping them could increase your seizure risk & you're probably at an above average risk naturally if you had seizures a year before taking any drugs.

Thanks for all the help everyone. A little piece of info that might be useful... Last time this happened, I was walking into my buddy's house after smoking with my other friend. I was almost to the couch and I noticed my aura coming on. It was a very strong feeling similar to passing out. DrGreenthumb, at one point I started to get addicted to xanax, so I stopped for a good month or so cold turkey with no symptoms, except wanting xanax real bad haha. I rarely drink and I've only done dxm twice. THe only thing I did regularly was smoke. Two things I really want to do again before I have to head out west though is LSD and DMT. I want one last good LSD trip, and I never had a full breakthrough on DMT. Does anyone think that if I do ok for a month or so and get on my new meds that I could consider this possibility? Beautiful Delusion, I'm pretty sure the feelings I had were the onset of a seizure. I get a very anxious feeling in my gut, I start losing my spatial awareness and my vision starts to fail. Laying down seems to help but I have to actively fight it off by not zoning out in the slightest.

You should probably stay away from psychedelics & stimulants if you're prone to seizures, dxm & other dissos too. Benzos prevent seizures, but they have a rebound that lowers your seizure threshold when they wear off, when you're in withdrawal, maybe your cold turkey from xanax is to blame? You should never cold turkey off a benzo addiction because it increases the risk of seizures, it's a slow taper to be safe.

I don't know if some types of weed could make you more likely to have a seizure, weed isn't known for causing seizures, maybe it's possible with some high thc/low cbd strain of weed, but CBD apparently prevents seizures. Synthetic cannabinoids are well known for causing seizures, but I've never heard of anybody having a seizure just because they smoked cannabis.

I remember reading a study that said that although cannabis raises the seizure threshold in those with epilepsy, it lowers it to some degree in the rest of the population. You can find a ton of anecdote linking cannabis use with seizures as well. That's not to say it was the cause in this case, just an interesting piece of information. I'll try finding that study tomorrow.

The xanax was not to blame cause that was close to a year ago. I took LSD and 25I I believe it's called, the "fake" LSD, DMT twice and some mushrooms in between two seizures. To be honest they seem to just come out of nowhere. No benzo or psychedelic has ever caused my seizures as far as I know. I'm really just baffled about the seizure I had after smoking cannabis. I suppose these last few seizures occurred after I started to smoke almost everyday, so that's something to go off of, however I smoked even more last Summer with no negative side effects, as I lived with my stoner friends at the time. Also took LSD (may have been the research chemicals as I think it had a taste and didn't have the "sparkly" effects like real LSD) while smoking and I was fine. Honestly I don't really see a correlation between all these substances, and I really want to trip one last time with my friend who introduced me to the wonderful world of psychedelics, whom I also never tripped with (her and I BOTH taking LSD) before I have to leave home, as I probably won't be able to do it again.

On another note, I'm going to try smoking a little bit one more time today and see how it treats me. When I had my last seizure I was stoned out of my mind, which I don't plan on doing this time. Also, I've felt a lot better the past few days. To all you wonderful people who are helping me out with this issue, I'll keep you updated with what's going on.

Thank you all!

Quick clarification, the between two seizures period was about two months. The night I did DMT I also took two blotters of LSD and 1/8 of mushrooms and felt on top of the world, not about to seize at all.

I can relate to cannabis causing symptoms of seizures or feelings of a seizure about to happen. Coming off of seroquel and Neurontin came with some nasty withdraws, including twitching, muscle spasms, increased heart rate, electricity like feeling all throughout body, etc.

Smoking weed while experiencing this withdraw at its worst stage made my symptoms a lot worse causing me to have full body spasms.

That's rough man...I'm not coming off my meds like you were, so I have no idea why it started inducing seizures all of a sudden. It's super frustrating! Also, when I went up to attempt the ganja again, I didn't even get to smoke because I started feeling an aura when I got there. I took my meds a little bit before I left, and I had to call my parents about 3 miles from my house because I almost had a seizure driving. Speaking of which Giraffe, I felt that tingling/electric feeling for the first time starting in my hands and spreading to my stomach, which knotted up something awful. Thank God this aura came on so slow so I had time to pull over. My conclusion is that all the drugs I've done aren't the cause of my seizures, but the arachnoid cyst in my brain is. My current doctor (full of shit mind you) told me the cyst WAS 100% causing my seizures and didn't even mention fenestration (draining it). The other day he prescribed me to a $900 medication (didn't tell me that) and told me the cyst WASN'T causing my seizures, and when I asked for an MRI and mentioned fenestration he completely shot me down and said I would be wasting my time. Sorry for venting a little, I know this is supposed to be about cannabis/drugs and seizures but the past few weeks have really brought my piss to a boil.

iF it was natural weed either it did not cause it or at worse it caused a Reaction to say a more serious eizure disord4er or seizure sensitivity Talk to your Doctor About it And Tell thsm fhs truth about every except th eweed unless you got a cool and non judgmental and a good docotor like mine is.

I recently had a friend suffering through the same issue, cannabis appeared to be triggering seizure-like attacks. In reality after going to several specialists she determined it was apparently something to do with her body not being able to process gluten properly. This might be something to look into for you, as hers have now stopped with her cessation of gluten

edit: i am simply passing on what she said, i don't know anything about the science and am a happy gluten eater so not trying to push dietary changes or anything, just seemed like very relevant info
