POLICE are pushing for new laws to ban "legal highs" and other synthetic drugs appearing on the market at a rate of almost one a week.

The head of the NSW Police Drugs Squad, Detective Superintendent Nick Bingham, said there had been an "explosion" of new synthetic cannabinoids since the state banned eight types of the fake pot, including kronic, last July.

Although the new drugs are said to not contain banned substances, police research indicates some contain illegal ingredients. Other new manufactured drugs detected in the country include synthetic cathinones including mephedrone and the drug MDPV, similar to the drugs ivory wave and MCAT.

"You have no idea of what you're taking," Mr Dillon said.

"You can order it today and it could be legal and it could arrive and the law could have changed. Police are not going to care you ordered it when it was legal."
