A new World Health Organization report released on Monday finds the dangerous consumption of alcohol led to 3.3 million deaths around the world in 2012 and that 16 percent of alcohol consumers take part in binge drinking

Dangerous alcohol consumption was responsible for 3.3 million deaths worldwide in 2012, according to a new World Health Organization report Monday.

Harmful alcohol use not only leads to addiction, but it can put people at a higher risk of over 200 disorders like tuberculosis and pneumonia.

“This actually translates into one death every 10 seconds,” Shekhar Saxena, head of the WHO’s Mental Health and Substance Abuse department, told reporters in Geneva, Global Post reports.

On average, every person in the world age 15 and older drinks 6.2 liters of pure alcohol a year, according to the report. However, less than half the world’s population drinks any alcohol, which means people who do drink average about 17 liters of pure alcohol a year. Men are more likely than women to experience alcohol-related deaths—though drinking among women is on the rise—and low-income communities are at a greater risk for social and health complications related to alcohol, the report said.

The report shows that 16% of drinkers partake in binge drinking, which is the most dangerous form of alcohol consumption. Europe has the highest alcohol consumption per capita, though consumption levels have been stable there for the last five years. Consumption has remained stable in Africa and in the Americas, but it appears to be rising in Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific regions, according to WHO. China hopes to grow its per capita consumption by 1.5 liters of pure alcohol by 2025.

The WHO says it would like to see a voluntary global target of a 10% reduction in harmful alcohol use by 2025.

It is important to note that this death stat includes accidental deaths, so accepting it also means you have to accept that any psychotropic drug--including marijuana--carries some sort of death toll.

True, but even among accidental deaths they are way more prevalent on alcohol than weed.

Well, if you think about it it's also responsible for a lot of births every second, a lot more than deaths actually. Especially unplanned kids.

As a society, at least in the west people are quite dependent on this lubricant to meet&mate.

I'm not going to lie - I've definitely had too much alcohol on occasion. Don't think that's so different from many people. That 16% statistic is a little vague; if they said that they regularly do so like every week or so it would be more clear.

That's only like 100 drinks total.

Uh, no.

17 liters = 17,000ml

17,000ml = 566.667 fluid ounces of PURE alcohol. For the sake of argument, lets say 30ml is 1 oz and pure alcohol is 99%. Therefore 1 ounce of pure alcohol would be approximately equal to 2.475 ounces of the standard, 40% (80 proof) alcohol.

566.667 multiplied by 2.475 = 1,402.5 regular shots or just under 4 shots per day, everyday of the year.

This is fairly accurate, I think. Shishigami either forgot to carry a decimal or he takes really massive drinks.

Factor in the amount that an serious alcoholic can get through, makes 4 shots a day look like childs play. That's where this huge average has come from, methinks, alcoholics data & binge drinkers data... If I drunk 4 shots a day, within ten days I'd need double that for any effect.

that still doesnt realy seem like that much

Are you sure? That doesn't seem to add up to me.

Whoops definitely dropped a decimal. 17000 [ml of EtOH/year] /(45 [ml of liquid/drink] * 0.40 [ml of EtOH/mL of liquid]) ~= 945 drinks @ 45 ml/shot of 40% (standard in the US) which is way more than the average person drinks.

Anyway. That seems way high but that's like 2.5 glasses of wine a night which might not be unreasonable among people who do drink.

Be so glad when society opens up to the even better social lubricants...
