Since MDMA neurotoxicity is about serotonin-related parts of the brain, for example, if we can get out of depression using SSRI drugs, doesn't it mean our receptors are still working?
Most of the serotonin receptors are on non-serotonergic cells, so loss of serotonergic terminals does not necessarily mean that there is a loss of receptors. There may actually be an increase in the expression of some types of receptors to compensate for reductions in transmitter release.
