eyes squint against the dull pallor of a grey maritime haze
as gloved hands reach towards coarse line
scents are inhaled, from the bucolic to the industrial
the acrid smell of fuel, the odor of slime, blood and viscera
as living creatures die and lie still

whether your ears are filled with the din of gulls or an outboard's steady roar,
may your boots always land on a distant shore, a distant shore

salt burns your eyes and consumes your senses as the abrupt static of a cresting wave
clouds your vision and slaps some sense into you
the insistent angry howl of forty knots humbles your associates
their nervous faces peering from beneath soggy hoods as additional knots form in stomachs
hands gripping cold aluminum beneath a darkening sky

was this my destiny all along, could there have ever been something more?
perhaps this was always where I was meant to be, on a distant shore, a distant shore

Brings me back to my "Destroyer" days in the Navy! 🚢

Swimming in a primitve sea
we must dive below the surface
a world of red neon
amd ultramarine

shining bridges on the ocean floor
reaching to the alien shore

I thoroughly enjoy the phrasing here; it's my favorite part. Great piece!

Thanks! Yeah I've never really done any kind of creative writing (outside of a classroom setting) but I was inspired to try after reading some of what other people wrote here, some of which is quite good imo!
