A CANNABIS crop bigger than the Sydney Football Stadium has been uncovered in a national park on the NSW far north coast.

The crop worth more than $8 million was found by police after a number of vehicles were recently seen driving into the park with covered numberplates.

The crop site, near a secluded narrow walking track known as Hell Hole Trail, measured 150m in length and 50m wide with a stock-proof fence surrounding it in the Bundjalung National Park.

There were more than 8500 plants — since incinerated.

“Our rural crime investigator and officers from National Parks and Wildlife Services found the crop on November 11,’’ Detective Chief Inspector Cameron Lindsay, crime manager for the Richmond Local Area command, said.

“This was a sophisticated and expensive setup, no doubt financed by an organised crime group,’’ he said.

“This crop is one of the largest found in recent times and its destruction will hurt those behind it,’’ he said.

The massive haul followed other efforts by police in tracking down Sydney cannabis supplies.

Over the course of last week, officers raided a number of locations in the Richmond area including Cawongla, Wadeville, New Italy, Double Duke, Jackie Bulbin, Mumblegum, Bulldog and Ewingar.

More than 4000 plants, with an estimated potential street value in excess of $8 million, were seized by officers from he State Crime Command’s Drug Squad.

Fuck people who destroy wilderness to grow crops. One of the biggest reasons we need regulation, for responsible cultivation and processing.

Most of the huge amounts of 'destroying wilderness' seems to be to develop new housing estates as far I see/notice.

Good thing they killed those plants.
So many people might have giggled or gotten the munchies on them, it makes me sick to think of it.

Ever see the show Pot Cops on Discovery channel? We have cartel grows in our national parks that are fairly damaging to the ecosystem...but the police lump these people in with the regular people growing pot and look at them both as "low life criminals"

You are absolutely correct about suburban sprawl being bad for the ecosystem...same with industries that buy "carbon tokens" in order to be able to pollute more. George W. Bush made the most sweeping de-regulations on pollution standards in quite a long time and our environment is reeling from it. Both developers, and corporate industries have huge lobbying groups...When someone hands you a few million through a SuperPAC...where does your allegiance lay? Also, have you read any of the GOP candidates views on global warming? Pretty freaking shady....you can almost see them bowing before their corporate overlords saying "Yes master, we are obfuscating whatever science there is in order to allow you to bend regulations to whatever end you wish."
