Pharmacology 5-HT2AR and NMDAR Psychedelics Induce Similar Hyper-synchronous States in the Rat Cognitive-limbic Cortex-basal Ganglia System

This thread contains discussion about a Pharmacology-related topic
can’t say I really understand electrophysiology that well but I do know that both NMDA antagonists and serotonergic psychedelics both flood certain areas of the brain with excess glutamate resulting in enhanced stimulation of AMPA receptors. When this overstimulation occurs in Brain areas responsible for emotions, cognition and sensory processing, The relationship between the internal mind and the external environment can become severely warped or even break down completely. Of course, NMDA antagonists and classical psychedelics differ hugely in the nature of many of their effects, but this is probably because NMDA antagonism incorporates a layer of anaesthesia, analgesia and amnesia which could make the experience less emotionally harsh or challenging for some people.
