Other Any chess players here?

I like training myself to play chess high.

I found that mushrooms are the best ones to get better results than sober. Especially if you play during the afterglow.
Oh trust me brother I've tried all the drugs, in serious settings like an OTB tournament.

Amphetamines can help performance but mostly help with fatigue of playing 10 hours straight.

LSD and cannabis do not make me a better player... But does make it fun to play.

Heroin does not make me a better player, in fact I forfeited 2 tournaments by simply deciding to leave to go do more heroin.

Benzos and alcohol actually hurt your performance the most. Avoid.

Overall drugs hurt my performance tbh.

Learned the hard way. ;P

THanks snafu, but with all this next 2k level, it makes me feel inefrioooor...

Bruh I was the 4th best on my team. 2 of my friends were rated over 2200 USCF at age 13....

If anything I was in awe of them and they helped me get better myself. The best way to get better at chess is to routinely play higher rated people.

I used to rub elbows with some amazing people. You know Danny Rensch from chess.com? I know him IRL

This is truly awesome. Any interesting game you would like to share?

Do you think it's possible to practice playing exclusively under LSD or weed and get good at it? I think that having a strong player trying to relearn chess to play it high a trip could reveal some interesting ideas.

Hmm I could probably find some notable tournament games I played, yet don't want to doxx myself

Love the idea, and I was definitely interested in a possible relationship to psychedelic effects on brain pattern recognition and chess patterns and play. Maybe a boon into non visual board perception (tactics, calculation). Any grandmaster will tell you high level chess is mostly pattern recognition.

I have to say that I definitely never found any insights. In fact I never wanted to think about chess while tripping. Found nothing. I never microdosed though.

The only drug that may have improved performance was meth/amphetamines. And that gets sketchy real quick.

@SnafuInTheVoid used to play chess never was rated high school player. Won 2 tourneys Trophy sits in my garage lol. I consider myself better then a casual, but still very amateur status.

I play lots of Hots and used to play League, and likened the strategy style much as a chess match works. Counter and counter playing the counter I.E the ever-evolving match among higher rated players.

@Snafu of the Forest I played in high school and got up to 1600 elo (on a good day). Bought my first chess computer in 1981-83. The depression set in b/c all of a sudden here was an electronic game I could not win against. Idabbled in some chess software (Fritz, Shredder, Chessmaster and a few others. But the fun was gone. Ido like playing chess programs against each other for some odd reason.

This is the DGT Centaur. The board has LED circular lights built under the surface of the board. Lift a piece and that square’s led circle lights up. Taking pieces, castling, advancing pieces, setting up positions, etc. Can use many commercial engines and has expandable ram/rom. I’d love one.

Oh yeah, that miniature boatd on the lower right hand side of the image is an e-ink chess board

I really should stop being influenced by posts here. I picked up Hiarcs~IPad amd am looking at Hiarcs Chess Explorer for either the PC or Mac (or linux running crossover).

This, I want this. It’s the Excalibur II (and II Anniversary Efition). Nice wood finish and beautiful pieces

Here’s a picture of the board

ELO rating is 3200. Pieces have rfid sensors in them so you just move pieces normally and the 4 indices of start and stop square are lit up. The screen, which I’ll show a closeup of next is an OLED screen, not LCD or LED. The unit itself os polished wood hiding the electronic guts. Firmware/engine upgradeable and you can purchase an add on which gives you 10+ engines from 1980’s on up computer chess games. Bluetooth, etc - you can play live games on lichess or against an engine on a computer.

Here’s the mini OLED screen

The price is hefty, about $3479 USD plus extra for the retro engines add on. this is by the same company that makes the Centaur chess game pictured above.

And for poops and giggles, here’s a Millenium eboard w/built in King(?) Engine

A nice wooden eboard with rfid pieces and minimal display. board indices light up to indicate moves.

A more civilized $400 USD. ELO rating ~2450

up to 1800 in blitz in a year of playing!
Not bad man. If I was sober, buckled my belt and played very seriously I would probably be around 1800 blitz. My USCF rapid rating is just under 2000 (but haven't played a rapid tournament in almost 15 years lol)

I haven't "studied" chess in so long, definitely very rusty. A lot of it is like riding a bike but things like calculation you fall off on if you don't exercise it.
