nice. it's basically the same as something somebody once told me: "10% of life is what happens. the other 90% is how you choose to deal with it."

i think that's true in large part. it seems naive and not a little simplistic to suggest that the difference between happy people and miserable people is, in part, that happy people have made a conscious choice to simply be happy.

sure, bad things - car crashes, loss, trauma - happen to people and suggesting that they can just will that kind of stress away by simply choosing to not be upset is a little naive but even the effect of that kind of stuff is a function of the individual's chosen reaction. i think what the saying is getting at is that we have a lot more control over this than some people would like (us) to believe.

i've been watching a fantastic documentary about film recently: The Story of Film: An Odyssey

in a recent episode, the narrator was describing a character in coppola's the conversation as: "...getting so lost in the fragments of other people's behavior that your own life dissolves".

it really struck me that i see (what appear to me as) examples of this everyday online. the internet is a powerful disintermediating force but also, somewhat paradoxically, a clinical, impersonal medium. our collective attention span reduces, we sometimes care more about who said something and to whom than what was actually said. and when we do see what's said, we have a tendency to make it all about ourselves.

erikmen, eleanor roosevelt said a lot of cool things. my favourite quote of hers: "no one can make you feel inferior without your consent."
